Watching the Pros on tv, some of them escape this position brilliantly, landing their ball on the green and often close to the pin.The majority of golfers will have to be satisfied with escaping the trap with whatever shot they can contrive, sideways, to get them back onto the fairway. The extra shot will be less risky than the overambitious alternative which may see the ball thump into the lip once again and remain difficult to play in the bunker.
